Spring is nearly upon us and it’s time for a seasonal wardrobe shuffle! As we look around the shops and the looks coming in from the catwalks, denim seems to be making a massive comeback and is a huge trend this spring. So what are the best ways to wear this look as we wave goodbye to winter and put a spring in the step of our denims?
If you are only investing in one denim look this season then make it a pair of jeans. With spring comes colour and fun and jeans in pastels and floral prints abound and will freshen up your look. Pair them with a graphic tee to add some edge or a monochrome shirt or top to keep the look smart. Metallics were popular on jeans at New York fashion week; if all-over sparkle isn’t for you then add some subtle jewelled embellishment to your denim with decorated jeans. Skinny jeans are as popular as ever this spring and as the weather warms up try pairing them with some strappy heels or sandals in silver or gold.
The denim jacket
These are making a big comeback this season in a variety of styles. Oversized jackets are really popular, so go for a loose fit or borrow your boyfriend’s! If you’re pairing the jacket with jeans, try to pick contrasting colours, for example a classic blue jeans jacket with some coloured jeans. The moto jacket is a smart alternative, try wearing it fitted and cropped in a light wash to contrast with some dark skinnies.
The vest is history – or is it?!
The denim vest is back, but this time it’s more for the girls and can be worked in a variety of ways. Layer it over a shirt or classic white tee for a great casual look, or over a flowing maxi skirt to keep it feminine. The vests themselves can be plain and fitted, embellished with studs or patchwork which is another denim trend seen this season, whether it’s contrasting denim patches or ditsy floral worked in to add a homespun edge. Choose a favourite fabric and work the patchwork trend yourself by customizing a plain vest.
Denim makes a fantastic blank canvas against which you can show off your accessories. Statement jewellery, bags and footwear are all the more noticeable against the background of denim which will make these pieces work harder for you. Metallic are popular this spring in both bags and footwear, and pairing these with your denim will enhance their effect and make them stand out all the more.
This trend is big this spring, but how to wear it and not look too OTT? The key is in the contrast. Make sure the pieces you are mixing are not too similar in colour, tone or texture and you will rock the look. Try pairing some dark jeans with a light-wash denim shirt, or a chambray shift dress with an over-sized dark denim jacket. Blending masculine and feminine-style pieces works well too, so a floaty tunic would work well under this season’s fitted moto jacket or a long, patchwork skirt would soften a structured denim vest.
Denim is definitely having a huge moment this spring, and there have never been so many ways to wear it. Embrace the variety, have fun experimenting and find those looks that work for you!
